Our research is directed towards developing advanced engineered structures through the creation of novel materials systems and innovative sensing and actuation devices. To achieve this goal, we are particularly interested in employing ordered nonlinear media (e.g., granular crystals, laminated composites) that offer additional degrees of freedom in controlling the mechanical response of structures. Based on the understanding of solid/structural mechanics, our research focuses on designing a new class of lightweight and adaptive structures with tailored mechanical characteristics. These advanced structures can enhance safety, performance, and sustainability of next-generation aerospace, civil, and mechanical structures. We are also interested in developing new sensing and actuating devices, leveraging the interplay between different types of media. These novel sensor instruments using linear & nonlinear wave dynamics can provide innovative methodology for evaluating aerospace, civil, and biological systems in a highly sensitive and controllable manner.
