The Nuclear Engineering Education Research (NEER) grant is a highly competitive peer-reviewed program providing nuclear engineering faculty and students funding for innovative research in nuclear engineering and related areas. Awards run from one to three years and are granted in nine separate technical areas related to nuclear engineering: reactor physics, reactor engineering, reactor materials research, radiological engineering, radioactive waste management, applied radiation science, nuclear safety and risk analysis, innovative technologies, and health physics.
Dr. Knight's grant proposal entitled, "Advanced TRISO Fuels with Zirconium Carbide for Very High Temperature Reactors" was one of only 17 funded for FY 2006/2007. Knight was only one of three researchers in the Southeast to receive such funding, and the only researcher located in the state of South Carolina.
"The College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) is very proud of Dr. Knight's award," said Dr. Harry J. Ploehn, CEC Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies. "CEC is unique in being the only university in the state to have a graduate program in Nuclear Engineering. Awards such as Dr. Knight's continue to strengthen our NE program and establish us as one of the Southeast's forerunners in nuclear energy research and development."
