2011 NRC Rankings for the USC Mechanical Engineering ranked 31st Nationally and 7th in the Southern Region Prof. Xiadong "Chris" Li received an NSF Grant entitled "Flexible Core/Shell Nanocable - Carbon Microfiber Hybrid Composite Electrodes for High Performance Supercapacitors" funded at $240,000 for three years. Prof. Jamil Khan in Mechanical Engineering has been awarded an NRC Grant of $450,000 for "University of South Carolina Nuclear Engineering Faculty Excellence Program". This is a three year grant and Prof. Travis Knight is the Co-PI. Prof. Chris Li received a grant funded by NSF. The project is entitled " Flexible Core/Shell Nanocable - Carbon Microfiber Hybrid Composite Electrodes for High-Performance Supercapacitors. " and is funded at $ $240,000 for three years. Prof. Travis Knight received a grant funded by Oakridge National Lab. The project is entitled "Thermochemical Investigation of U-Ln-O Systems" and is funded at $ $80,000 from one year. Awards and RecognitionCarey Read, Jr. has been awarded a 2011 U.S. Department of Energy Innovations in Fuel Cycle Research Award for his paper, “Using a Modified CINDER90 Routine in MCNPX 2.6.0 for the Prediction of Helium Production in Minor Actinide Targets.” The funding for this award is through the Office of Nuclear Energy, Fuel Cycle Technologies. Dillon Inabinett, one of our Mechanical Engineering students, has been awarded the Maher Scholarship in the amount of $5,000 given by Citizens for Nuclear Technology Awareness (CNTA). Prof. Mike Sutton has been selected to receive the 2013 Murray Medal and to deliver the 2013 Murray Lecture. This is the highest honor bestowed by SEM (Society of Experimental Mechanics). This award recognizes sustained and distinguished technical contributions to the field of experimental mechanics. Mac read and Daniell Tincher received awards for "Best Presenter" in their respec tive technical tracks at the American Nuclear Society Student Conference 2011 held in Atlanta, GA April 14-17. Mac Read presented in the technical track of "Reactor Physics," and Daniell Tincher presented in the technical track of "Fuel Cycle and Waste Management." Prof. Travis Knight and Prof. Frank (Fanglin) Chen were recommended by the president to the USC Board of Trustees for awarding tenure and promotion to the rank of Associate Professor.
