Shared Expectations

NSF GK12 Graduate Fellows and Teacher Partners

 

Fellows are expected to:

  1. Spend an average of 10 hour each week providing direct assistance to the school.  This includes
    1. Up to 1 hour planning with the Partner Teacher,
    2. At least 7 hours providing direct assistance in the Partner Teacher’s classroom,
    3. The balance of time can be spent with the Partner Teacher or helping other teachers with science, mathematics and technology instruction.
  2. Spend an average of 5 hours each week in preparation for school-based activities.  This includes
    1. Finding, adapting, adopting, and developing experiments, demonstrations, projects and other hands-on activities that support the Partner Teacher’s lesson plan. 
    2. To the extent possible, these activities should use engineering examples to provide the motivation for learning science and mathematics.
  3. Successfully complete other components the GK12 training program (EDTE 701, summer workshop, program evaluation, etc.),
  4. Make satisfactory progress towards your graduate degree.

Teacher Partners are expected to:

  1. Share lesson plans and long-range plans with the Fellow in advance so that the Fellow can enhance classroom instruction with appropriate experiential activities.
  2. Provide 7-10 hours per week on average for opportunities for the Fellow to assist you with science, mathematics and technology instruction.  Don’t forget that Fellows can bring science and engineering perspectives to lessons such as history, art, music, PE, etc.
  3. Spend up to 1 hour each week planning with the Fellow.
  4. Facilitate the Fellow’s interactions with other school personnel if time permits.
  5. Participate in evaluation focus groups and/or surveys.
