Professor Reifsnider and his research group (Professors Chen and Xue) were funded for a  DOE EFRC (http://www.er.doe.gov/bes/EFRC.html). This award of  $12.5M is the largest competitive research grant in the history of the University.

Professor Frank Chen and his group were awarded $ 497,500 DoE funding for a proposal entitled “Tritium Sequestration in Gen IV NGNP Gas Stream via Proton Conducting Ceramic Pumps”.

Congratulations to Jennifer Snipes (advisor: Dr. Baxter), Jason Ouzts(advisor: Dr. Sutton)  and Clinton Canaday (advisor: Dr. Reynolds) for receiving NASA SC Space grant graduate fellowships.

Prof. Michael A. Sutton and co-authors had a book published “Image Correlation, for Shape, Motion and Deformation Measurements”, Springer 2009.

Congratulations to Latoya Dixon and Rebecca Bandy, as both ME Students have been offered fellowships from a joint program at Virginia Tech and the Technical University at Darmstadt (Germany) for the summer. Both projects are in automotive technology

 

Chris Xiaodong Li has been elected to the Editorial Board of the newly launched  journal: “International Journal of Applied Mechanics (IJAM)."

 

Jason Burnside, a senior ME student who is working under Dr. Arash Kheradvar’s supervision has received the highly prestigious

LWW Young Innovator Fellowship from American Society of Artificial Internal Organs for his abstract: “Progress on Design and Development of a Bi-leaflet Mitral Bioprosthetic Valve”. The participants of this competition are from all over the world. Jason is supposed to give a talk on the topic on May 30 in Dallas, TX. Jason’s involvement in this project  is supported by the Office of Undergraduate Research through the Magellan scholarship.
 

Professors Chris Li and Mike Sutton, with co-authors, have been awarded the 2008 Professional Engineering Publisher’s PE Prize for the most significant research article, titled "Drift and spatial distortion elimination in atomic force microscopy images by the digital image correlation technique."

Congratulations to Dr. Abdel Bayoumi on being awarded $500,000 by the SC National Guard/DOD for his project entitled, "U.S. Army Conditioned Based Maintenance Program: AIrcraft Components Testing."

Congrats to Dr. Abdel Bayoumi on being awarded $868,404 by the SC National Guard / DOD for his project entitled, "Comprehensive Rotary-Wing Aircraft Research Plan in Support of the U.S. Army Conditioned Based Maintenance Program"

Awards and Recognition


Congratulations to Tyler Ray (advisor: Dr; Baxter) for receiving an Honorable Mention in the NSF Graduate Fellowship program.

Prof. Chris Li was promoted to the Rank of Full Professor.

Prof.  Anthony Reynolds was awarded 2009 CEC Research Achievement Award, college’s highest recognition for research performance.

Professor Jed Lyons has been chosen to be a Fellow Member of The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Society.  The 2009 induction of ASEE Fellows will take place at the Annual Awards Banquet on Wednesday evening, June 17, 2009 in Austin, Texas.

Dr. Michael Sutton received the 2008 C.E. Taylor Award fror Outstanding Leadership in Research and Service from the Society of Experimental Mechanics.

Dr. Xiaodong Li received the 2008 CEC Research Progress Award.

Dr. Jamil Khan has been elected to the ASME grade of Fellow. He now has the distinction of being one of about 2,834 Fellows out of more than 100,000 ASME members. With the admiration and respect of all ASME Fellows, his election recognizes his lifetime engineering achievments.
